April and May 2012 are when this golden world – planet of the rings – is easiest to spot and brightest. The planet Saturn is relatively easy to find in 2012, because it’s near a bright star, Spica, in the constellation Virgo. This star always returns to the early evening sky in April – spring for the Northern Hemisphere, autumn for the Southern Hemisphere. Spica stays out all night long – or nearly all night long – on April and May nights. Likewise, April or May of 2012 will also be the best time to see the ringed planet Saturn in all its glory.

In 2012, you can follow the curve in the handle of the famous Big Dipper asterism to find the planet Saturn.

On April 15, 2012, Earth will pass between Saturn and the sun. That is why Saturn is at its best this year in April and May. In mid-April, Saturn will rise in the east as the sun sets in the west. Why? Because that is when Earth is passing between Saturn and the sun, and Saturn is opposite the sun as seen from Earth.

Saturn closest, brightest, opposite the sun on April 15

Our Earth in its smaller, faster orbit around the sun is gaining on Saturn as we speak. We fly through space at some 107,000 kilometers per hour (67,000 miles per hour), in contrast to Saturn’s 35,000 kilometers per hour (22,000 miles per hour). So naturally there will come a time when Earth passes between Saturn and the sun.

We do this every year, and, at such a time, we always see Saturn opposite the sun in our sky – rising in the east when the sun is setting in the west. Our passage between Saturn and the sun is called an opposition of Saturn.

Why is the time around opposition the best time of year to see Saturn? Every year, around the time we go between the sun and Saturn, the ringed planet is at its closest to Earth and brightest in our sky. Saturn is the faintest of the bright planets. It’s still pretty bright, but, normally, you wouldn’t pick it out from among the stars. But around April or May of 2012 you can, because Saturn appears about as bright as the brightest stars.

Because we’ll be passing Saturn – the sixth planet outward from the sun – from an inside track around the sun, the ringed planet will actually look as if it’s going backward (retrograde) in front of the fixed stars of the constellation Virgo from February 8, 2012, until June 26, 2012.

This apparent westward (retrograde) movement of Saturn is really an illusion. If you were in a race car passing another race car from the inside track, you might glimpse the other car appearing to be going backwards for a time relative to background objects. It’s not really going backwards, of course. It only looks that way. In the same way, Saturn normally moves toward the east in front of the stars, but this outer planet appears to be going westward against the background stars for a few months every year, around the time of its opposition.
By the way, Saturn’s yearly opposition happens about two weeks later with each passing year. The 2009 opposition was on March 8. The 2010 opposition was on March 21. The 2011 opposition was on April 3. The 2012 opposition is April 15. And the 2013 opposition will be on April 28.
Saturn basics

Earth travels around the sun once a year, while Saturn takes about 29-and-a-half years to orbit the sun once. Earth’s orbit is smaller, and we move faster than this outer planet. So once a year, we pass between Saturn and the sun and gain another lap on the planet.

Golden Saturn as seen by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1980
You might realize from what I just said that Saturn is relatively slow-moving in orbit and, therefore, slow to change its position against the background stars. That’s why the early stargazers called it “the oldest of the old sheep.”

Like all planets, Saturn is lovely to gaze upon. Its golden color is fascinatingly reminiscent of wonderful spacecraft photos of Saturn. It’s a real place, after all, not just a light in the sky. Plus, Saturn’s brightness waxes and wanes in a subtle way throughout every year, making it fun to watch.

Can you see the rings of Saturn if you look with the eye alone? No, you need a small telescope to see the rings. But, to the unaided eye, Saturn will appear as a bright golden “star” … very beautiful. And unlike the twinkling stars, Saturn will shine with a steady light. That might help you identify it.

I want you to see Saturn at its best in April and May 2012.

On April 15, 2012, the Earth in its orbit will pass between Saturn and the sun, at which time Saturn will appear opposite the sun in our sky. So, in April and May 2012, if you’re looking for Saturn during the evening hours, you should be facing east to southeast at nightfall and south around middle to late evening.

On any night of 2012 – because the planet Saturn stays close to the star Spica throughout 2012 – you can rely on the Big Dipper to guide you to Spica and Saturn. In other words, you can follow the arc to Arcturus and drive a spike to Spica from the handle of the Big Dipper. Once you identify Spica, notice the bright golden starlike object nearby. That’ll be Saturn. Saturn and Spica’s orientation with respect to the horizon will change throughout the year, and they are different in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. But Saturn and Spica remain close during 2012. Two bright objects in the sky, near each other, might be them!

According to Vedic Astrology there are some obviousconnections between the game of chess and the astrology which tells us that the Chess is a game encouraged by the Universal Laws, maybe by the planetary movement. We can say that Chess is another kind of Astrology.

• Like in Chess we have a board divided in 8 columns and 8 rows, same as in Astrology we use the zodiacal circle divided in 12 signs.

• In Chess we have 6 symbols, the pieces (King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, and Pawn), in Astrology we have 7 symbols, the 7 traditional planets, (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn).

• There are rules for the movement of these symbols and each has a specific value or clarification.

• The Art of the Player of Chess is to thoroughly study and understand the network of influences and forces on the chessboard, then to elaborate a strategy that will lead him/her to the defeat of the opponent.

• Astrologer is an art tostudy carefully and understand the network of impacts in the astrological chart, then to elaborate an overall conclusion of it.

• So far we seem to have only some general rules that apply to most board games.

There are some strong pieces-planets correlations.

• The King is considered as it isconnected with the Sun. When the King is overwhelmed and captured (checkmate) the ready is over.

• The Queen is correlated with the Moon in astrology. The Moon moves fastest of all planets, so does the Queen on the chessboard. In horary and traditional astrology the Moon is the most important planet as the Queen in Chess.

• Pawns are like children, which are usually ruled by the Moon. When they grow old, that is, when they reach the other end of the chessboard, they become Queens. Thus the Pawns are also correlated with Moon.

• Bishops areconnected with Jupiter, as Jupiter rules the religion and the religious persons. Though, as the Bishops move always diagonally and there is the planet Mars whose glyph or symbol is a circle with an arrow coming out of it inslanting direction, thus the Bishops can also be connected functionally with Mars. So, the Bishops' nature is Jupiter or Mars.

•The Rooks are also named Castles, therefore are related with Saturn. Since they move only horizontally or vertically. As the ideogram of Venus is a formed of a circle with a cross below it, we may say that the Rooks are functionally related with Venus. So, the Rooks' nature is just like Saturn or Venus.

• The Knights are like Horses, and they move abnormally by jumping over other pieces, much like flying. Therefore, the Knights may be related with Mercury, the Roman name of Hermes, the messenger god, with winged sandals.

ASTROLOGICAL GROWTH OF CHESS

Now we see the connections between the twelve astrological houses of an astrology chart and the growth of a game of chess.

Traditional "Happiness of the planets" are particularly helpful concept here. It refers to the house where a planet enjoys itself, its energy being really suitable and useful there. The astrological tradition says that Mercury has its joy in the 1st house, the Moon in the 3rd house, Venus in the 5th house, Mars in the 6th house, the Sun in the 9th house, Jupiter in the 11th house and Saturn in the 12th house.

• 1st house is related with the start of the game. The players move the first pieces. At this stage, the Knights are very important as they jump over the Pawns and can attack the opponent's Pawns. Mercury (the Knights) has its joy in the 1st house.

• 2nd house is associated with the next stage of the game, the development of the pieces, the building of a structure of defence.

• 3rd house is related with the building of a line of advanced Pawns (associated with the Moon), cooperating and defending one another. At this stage the Pawns are really important. The Moon has its joy in the 3rd house.

• 4th house is related with the castling. The King is put behind a wall of Pawns, in a safe place. The first part of a regular chess game is over.

• 5th house is related with thinking of a strategy of action; here the creativity of the player is put to trial. The main issue now is to strengthen one's position in order to impress the adversary. The Rook (Venus) enters the game for the first time, as it got out of the chessboard corner through the castling. Venus has its joy in the 5th house.

• 6th house is related with a stage of preparations. Once the overall strategy has been established in the previous stage, it is now the time to put it into practice, first by apparently innocent moves. In the same time, one must be alert to speculate any bad move of the opponent, while trying to fix any weak points in the defence. The Knights (Mars) should be used to control the diagonals. Mars has its joy in the 6th house.

• 7th house is related with the attack, with the overt challenge. It is the first house over the horizon and from now on the game can be played openly. The 8th house is related with traps and pitfalls, the most risky stage of the game, when the attack may fail and this would lead to a keyattack. If the attack is successful, the opponent's defence line can be broken and some of his pieces taken: the 8th house is the turned 2nd house (pieces) from the 7th house (opponent).

• 9th house is related with important steps toward victory. Once the defence line of the opponent has been broken, at this stage the King (Sun) may be vulnerable, by check. The Sun has its joy in the 9th house.

• 10th house is the stage when the player is already leading and now has to plan the next steps to make toward victory.

• 11th house is related with the final stage of the game, when the final plan is put into practice. After both sides have captured many pieces, the Knights (Jupiter) have now plenty of space to run across the chessboard. Jupiter has its joy in the 11th house.

• 12th house is related with the end of the game. The Rooks (Saturn) are related from behind the Pawns to advance and transform into Queens, which can checkmate the adversary's King and bring the victory. Saturn has its joy in the 12th house.

AN ASTROLOGICAL OVERVIEW OF CHESS

• Consider the 1st house to represent the player that makes the first move in the game, the one with the white pieces, while the opponent, the player with the black pieces, will be represented in the 7th house.

We all have so many desires in our heart but these should be legitimate. Desire is at the root of all sins. It is a desire, that started the first vibration in the Obviousand un obvious Consciousness. Hindu literature says that there are four legitimate goals of life. These four objects that human beings pursue are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.DHARMA

It is said that the Natural law is the Dharma of the Sun to shine. It is the dharma of the planets to revolve around the Sun. Dharma, when followed carefully, can carry one across the ocean of existence. For following dharma, is to go with the cosmic flow. Though the role of religion is to show or show what dharma is, often it ends up in doctrine and ritual. Dharma is much more than religion. It is beyond all beliefs and narrow ideas religion. To follow dharma is doing what you ought to do.

ARTHA

It refers to the attainment of wealth or resources that are valuable. Prosperity is essential to allow us to function happily in life. If knowledge is used for supporting oneself, it can also be part of Artha.

KARMA

Karma is the achievement of one's aspirations. Desires and ambitions are part of “Kama”. Lust too is part of it and Kama just represents one's inborn urge to attain one's ambitions.

MOKSHA

The aims of Artha and Kama can be followedas long as they are genuine if they are based on dharma. With dharma as the basis, if one has attained the first three goals, finally a time comes when one excels them. The first three goals are a means to attain the ultimate goal of Moksha or liberation. If you have gone through a lot of the first three goals, you can realize that there is no permanent pleasure in them, we can realise that this world is temporary and that no fixed and temporary thing can give you eternal happiness. Endless happiness is possible only if a thing is endless and everlasting.Achieving moksha or liberation is just achieving union with the cosmic consciousness or going back to Cosmic Roots.

All four aims are important to a life well lived. Actually each of them helps the other, till finally we start desiring the ultimate aim of liberation. But most people do not follow all the four goals similarly because their own individual karmas direct them to prefer particular courses of action and this can be determined from the positions of the Grahas in the signs and houses.

Aries is the first house of the zodiac. In aseparate chart, the ascendant or Lagna is the first house. We can apply the same values:

PLACEMENT OF THE 4 AIMS IN ONE’S CHART

DHARMA HOUSE

When we uphold dharma, it can protect us (dharmorakshatirakshitah). If a person has leaded a Dharmic life in the past, the effects are seen in the current life. This can give him a good education in their childhood which is represented by the 5th and 9th houses also it is seen in the birth of good children and happiness through them again in the 5th and 9th houses. Lastly, if the Dharma has been very strong, it gives Sadhana (mantra in the 5th and guru/spiritual teacher' in the 9th).

ARTHA HOUSE

Houses related with Artha (i.e. 2nd, 6th and 10th) are also the houses related with the occupation of the person which then leads to the creation of properties that sustain (remember these are the earth signs in the natural zodiac) . To determine an individual's profession (which is the means to wealth or Artha), we have to analyse the Artha triangle. i.eHouses 2, 6 and 10 . The second showsmoneys and gathering of wealth. The sixth indicates service, rivals, debts etc. Most businesses run on loans. The other person is seen on the 7th, 12th being loss or expenditure, the 6th indicates loss to others (12th to 7th). When we take a loan or get into debt, the other person loses, and we gain or get his money. As such our money is based on his spending. In the changing scenario, the 6th house is no longer totally bad. But judging the exact effects needs more knowledge of astrology.

KARMA HOUSE

The Kama houses (3rd, 7th and 11th) deal with desire. The 3rd shows one's efforts, while the 7th shows all relations with the other person be it a spouse or business partner, or anyone with whom we enter into a contract. The 11th shows one's aspirations, goals and their completion or otherwise. It also shows attachments or ties of a lasting nature like a permanent friendship. The Kama houses show the drives of the person, showing one's efforts, aspirations, goals and interaction with others for the fulfilment of the same but the key word is desire.

UPACHAYA HOUSES OR HOUSES OF GROWTH

The term on the Upachaya houses is not out of place here. The Upachaya houses are the houses of growth. They are 3, 6, 10, 11 houses. These are the areas where man has more freewill. These houses have a chance for the so-called growth or progress substantially. In fact malefic are favoured here. According to Vedic Astrology the results given for malefic in these houses are better than other houses. Malefic here seem to give more growth materially while actually taking the individual away from the path of understanding. All the Upachaya houses are either Artha (wealth) or Kama (desire) houses. Freewish is allowed more in these areas. Prarabdha rules more strongly in the other houses. 2nd house which signifies the family and the 7th which represents marriage, are largely determined by karmic debts and a person has very less freewish in these areas. We have no choice in the family that we are born into.

MOKSHA HOUSES

Moksha houses are considered as spiritual houses and secret houses. They are seldom silent properly and this is the part of the book of fate that is closed to normal human minds. Even the best astrologers know very little of these houses. The 4th and the 8th houses represent psychic and occult powers /abilities, Samadhi, nightmares. The 12th house also means everything foreign-foreign countries, foreigners, etc being watery and also because it signifies the feet. Another important signification of the 12th house is that ‘it is a secret house other than the 8th. Scouts, detectives, people involved in any kind of ‘secret work' could have a strong 12th house connection. The 12th house also showsending. Water stands for cosmicending. So material ending (loss and expenditure) or voluntary giving away (charity or philanthropy) or at its best the dissolution of the Individual into the Cosmic, in other words final release or moksha, are all indicated by this house. While the 4th indicates interest and study into the occult, the 8th takes us deeper into the secrets of the Cosmic Consciousness and the 12th actually frees the individual under ideal conditions. Actually any of these trio, especially the 8th and 12th give experiences which are unusual, or spiritual. The exact nature of the experience, whether it is truly spiritual or belonging to a lower or higher level of illusion (maya), is decided based on the planets and other houses involved. To understand one's spiritual experiences, an analysis of 4, 8, 12 houses and signs becomes important. In fact any strong links between the houses of Dharma and Moksha bodes well for spiritual feelings and growth.

The Hindu New Year starts on Chaitra Sukla Pratipada meaning:Pratipada: the first (lunar) day (tithi)

Sukla: the bright half (of the lunar fortnight)

Chaitra: the name of the first lunar month

What does this mean astronomically or astrologically?

Each lunar month consists of two fortnights- one bright and the other dark. Each fortnight has 15 lunar days or tithis. The Amavasya and Poornima mark the dark and full moons during these phases. The FIRST DAY of the waxing period, immediately after the Dark Moon (Sukla Pratipada), is the starting of the lunar cycle and hence the lunar month. The twelve lunar months are named after the nakshatra on the full moon day of the month. In other words the (lunar) month when the full moon is in Aswini is called Aswayuja, in Krittika is called Kartika, in Mrigasira is called Margasira and so on.
A year is known as 'Samvatsara' in Sanskrit though in the broader Upanisadic sense 'Samvatsara' means any conceivable but indeterminate unit of time . In fact 'Samvatsara' and 'Kala' are both included in the thousand names (sahasranama) of Visnu. In Saivite tradition too, Time is personified as Siva – as Mahakala, the Great (God of) Time.

The division of time is an important topic in the Puranas as well as Agamas. In its most fundamental form the division of time is based on the movement of astronomical bodies, especially the luminaries i.e. the Sun and the Moon. Astrologically speaking Hinduism recognises at least five ways of reckoning the year (Samvatsara).

1. Nakshatramana

2. Souramana

3. Chandramana

4. Savamana

5. Barhaspatyamana

As is obvious from the names, Nakshatramana is the system of reckoning based on nakshatras. Likewise Souramana (Soura: Solar) is based on the Sun's transit of the Vernal equinox (spring time). The Sun's ingress into Mesha (Aries) marks this. In certain states of India (like Tamil Nadu) this is followed as the New Year for religious/cultural purposes.

In other states like Andhra, Maharashtra etc the New Year is celebrated according to Chandramana. Astrologically speaking Chandramana is the accepted system in Hinduism. As is obvious, Chandramana is based on the Moon. But to depict it as purely lunar is wrong. In reality it is luni-solar.

As mentioned earlier the lunar month starts with the first day (of the bright half) immediately after the Dark Moon (conjunction of the Sun and Moon) and reaches its peak during the Full Moon (when the Sun and Moon are in Opposition). Thereafter the second fortnight starts till the next conjunction of the luminaries. Thus during the month of Chaitra the full moon is in Chittra nakshatra (Virgo) while the New Moon is in Pisces (since the Sun and Moon are in conjunction at this point). In other words in the month of Chaitra the Moon and Sun are in Pisces on the first day of the month (as the Moon is 180 degrees apart on the Full Moon and the Full moon occurs in Chitta nakshatra in Virgo.

But why is Chaitra selected as the first month? It is here that the SOLAR basis enters. The New Year is on the first lunar day following the new moon nearest to the Vernal (spring) equinox, thus making it a LUNI-SOLAR system. Let me digress a bit here.
Nearly every festival in Hinduism has an astronomical basis. Most ancient cultures had festivals based on astronomical events, especially the Sun or Moon. Let us take the Sun. There are four landmarks in the Sun's journey in the heavens.

Vernal equinox

Autumnal Equinox

Summer solstice

Winter solstice

For the purposes of this article I will deal with only the Vernal and Autumnal equinoxes here. While the Hindus celebrate the first lunar day nearest to the Vernal equinox as New Year, the Jews celebrate the first lunar day nearest to the Autumnal equinox as New Year. Yet the Hindus celebrate the first nine lunar days nearest to both the Vernal and Autumnal equinoxes. Both these times are sacred as the Navaratris. The first nine lunar days closest to the Spring equinox are celebrated as Vasanta (Spring) Navaratris (nine nights) while the first nine lunar days closest to Autumnal equinox are celebrated as the Sharad (Autumn) Navaratris (n ine nights).

Though the Autumnal Navaratris are celebrated in a major way by all hindus as the Dusshera Navaratris, ardent worshippers of Sakti fast and chant the 'Devi Mahatmyam' during the Vasanta Navaratris too. The Hindu New Year (referred to as 'Ugadi' or 'Yugadi' in Telugu) marks the beginning of the Vasanta (spring) Navaratris and 'Sri Rama Navami' marks the climax. It is not a mere coincidence that Sri Rama Navami marks the climax of the Spring Navaratris. Among the incarnations of Visnu, Parasara identifies Sri Rama with Sun.

I hope the above clarifies the LUNI-SOLAR nature of the Hindu New Year as also the astronomical basis of the Hindu New Year and some other related points too. It also illustrates partly why only Hindu astrology is a CONTINUOUS and LIVING system among the ancient schools of astrology. Astrology is a part and parcel of everyday life in India even to this day whether people realise it or not. Finally it should be mentioned that in Hindu mundane astrology, though Moon is given prime importance, Sun has never been undermined or left out.

Picture

Mathematical astrology is as important as Predictive astrology in astrology. It is a base through which astrology determines the Nakshatra and planetary positions and forecasts there by. Here in this article l will discuss Kala Balawhich is a piece of Shad-Bala by which planetary strengths is measured.KaalaBala means the time Weakness. Exactly we can say that the planets obtain Time Strength which is permanent from various sources. Time Strength is sub-divided in to six parts namely, NataunnataBala (diurnal strength), PakshaBala (Moon phase strength), TribhagaBala (day night strength), Varsha, Maas, Dina Bala (Year, month, day strength), YuddhaBala (planetary war strength) and AyanBala (equinoctial strength). Here in this article we will discuss about the first three sub-divisions of Time Strength of planets.

NATAUNNATA BALA

In NataunnataBala the Moon, Saturn and Mars are stronger during midnight and weaker during midday. The Sun, Jupiter and Venus get stronger at midday and are less strong at midnight. In Time Strength of planets Mercury always has full strength. The Sun, Moon and Mars acquire 60 points when a native is born at midnight. Same planets receive 0 point when a native is born at after noon time. The Sun, Jupiter and Venus get 60 points when a native is born during midday and has 0 point when a child is born during midnight.

PAKSHA BALA

The PakshaBala is connected with the lunar phase. There are two Pakshas in a month; these are Krishna Paksha and ShuklaPaksha. A Paksha is of 15 days. According to Shad Bala auspicious planets are strong during Shuklapaksha. Jupiter, Moon and Venus have auspicious effect on Mercury for 8 days during Shukla and Krishna Paksha. These planets are strong in ShuklaPaksha. The Sun, Mars and Saturn have inauspicious influence on Mercury for 8 days during the two Paksha. These planets are strong in Krishna Paksha.
The Moon has 120 points on New Moon and Full Moon day. Moon becomes strong with 60 points during the Paksha and extremelyeffects human lives. To see the strength of Paksha the difference between the longitudes of Sun and Moon has to be found out. If the angle is greater than 180 degree then it has should be withdrew from 360 degrees. The result is divided by 3 to get the final result which is the Paksha strength of a planet. The formula to determine Paksha strength of planet is- (Moon / Sun) = PakshaBala of the planet

TRIBHA BALA

In TribhagaBala the day and night are divided into three parts. Jupiter always gets 60 points in TribhagaBala. If a child is born at the first half of the day then his horoscope will have strong Mercury with 60 points. If the birth time of a native is on the second half of the day then Sun is strong with 60 points and if the birth has taken place in the third part of a day then Saturn is strong in his horoscope with same opinions.

The Moon gets 60 opinions if a child is born in the first part of the night. Venus is strong in the horoscope if a birth takes place on the second half of the night and Mars is strong with 60 points if a child is born in the third part of the night.

Marriage is very auspicious in India. But marriage Muhurat can be distressed with many Doshas. Vedic Astrology says that the marriage should be fixed after carefullyconsidering these doshas. Persons who do not bother about these Doshas may face problems and complications in their marriage. Here in this article we will discuss about some of these doshas.MARRIAGE AND EKARGAL DOSHA

The EkargalDosha is also known as KharjorDosha and this Dosha is distressed on the marriage Muhurat when planets are positioned at odd distance of 1st, 3rd, 5th or 7th house covering all the 28 Nakshatrastogether withAbhijit while defining the Nakshatra position of Sun and Moon.

EkargalDosha becomes malefic if the distance of the Nakshatras between Sun and Moon is rough and any unpromising yoga like Vatipat, Shoola, Ganda, Vyaghat, Vaidhrit, Vajra, Vishkumbh, Paridhi or Atigand is located between Sun and Moon’s coldness. This Dosha is ineffective if Moon is located on the SamsangyakNakshatra.

UPAGRAH DOSHA

The Upagrahdosha is shaped when a relationship is recognised between the Sun’s Nakshatra and marriage Nakshatra. If the nakshatra of wedding is located at either of the 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24 or 25th Nakshatra from the Nakshatra of the Sun then this Dosha is shaped.

Suppose the marriage day has Moon on MrigashiraNakshatra and Sun on Ashwini, astrologer after calculation finds that Mrigashira is located at the 5th place from Ashwini (Sun’s nakshatra) for which UpagrahDosha is shaped. Astrology says that marriage should not be fixed during this unpromising Dosha as the bride and groom may be distressed by its malefic influence.

YUTI DOSHA

This Yutidosha is another complaint which may harm a marriage Muhurat. Though determining the date of marriage astrologer prudently studies the combination of planet, Nakshatra, dates and other aspects of the day to find an auspicious Muhurat for the marriage. This Yutidosha is malefic in this purpose. It is formed by the combination of Moon’s Nakshatra and any malefic Nakshatra like Saturn, Rahu or Ketu.According to astrological principles Yuti is always unpromising whether it is made up of malefic or benefits planets but its malefic power diminishes when;

• Moon is exalted and situated in its own sign.

• If Jupiter aspects the Moon or is stationed with the Moon on the centre house.

• Grouping of Moon and any malefic planet on a Nakshatra and if their signs are dissimilar then YutiDosha becomes useless.

The term Jyotisha is made up of both Astronomy and Astrology. Vedas do not speak directly about either astrology or astronomy. The Samhitasmention to the stars, groups etc. This knowledge may be engaged for various determinations. The determination depends on the user too and not just the knowledge open and there are at least four approaches to understanding the Vedic body. • AdhiYajna approach which is primarily ritual based.

• AdhiDaivata approach which is primarily archetypal.

• Adhyatma approach which is primarily psycho-spiritual.

• Tritaya approach or the integrated approach

Vedas have a ceremonial basis too; the roots are even deeper, running into psychological, philosophical and spiritual depths. Thus we will see the various approaches to understand the Veda. The apparently different approaches are not contrary or disparate. They are co-existent in a way. Therefore the Vedic chants can be understood in more than one way and at more than one level- ritualistic, psychological and spiritual. SkandaSmrti suggests the Vedic body has three senses ('trayorthassarva-vedeshu' ). These three senses can be put up in an integrated and interrelated approach which the 'Tritaya' school of thought significances to do. Within Jyotish there is an integrated approach to astrology combining both the psychological and projecting perspectives concurrently.

The famous South Indian text ' PrasnaMarga' defines the meanings of various houses (bhavas) under two categories- external (bahya) and internal (antara). Even Varahamihiraaccepts a similar approach in his 'BrihatJataka' .These ‘internal’ mentions the abstract psycho-spiritual phenomena/principles while the 'external' refers to the more concrete manifestation as events, persons and places.

The external measures are adelay or reflection of the internal psycho-spiritual principles. Integrated approach to houses and planets shelters way to a simultaneous approach to both the psychological/ internal and predictive/ external levels of astrological understanding or practice. Moreover such an integrated approach is more in keeping with the current overall example shift.

Though the spiritual foundations of Jyotisha are unchanging and timeless in some sense, the approach to astrology could be influenced by the times and the paradigm shift. A strong influence of Humanistic and/or Transpersonal psychology is increasingly evident on a large number of intellectuals during the modern times. Carl Jung's works have begun to influence some in the Jyotisha camp too, while most western astrologers are already looking at astrology through the eyes of modern psychology. Yet one should not mistake the superficial approach to psychology that some western astrologers adopt in the name of "psychological readings".

Similarly one shouldn't mistake the fatalistic approach to life that some eastern astrologers adopt in the name of karma. Most Vedic astrologers feel that psychological astrology is for lesser brains who dare not predict, whilst most tropical astrologers are wary of and look down upon "fortune telling", as they refer to predicting. As an astrologer who studied and practiced both the approaches, I feel that both are wrong. How can one predict without understanding the psychological roots? On the other hand how would one be sure that all these psychological readings are right unless one is able to predict fairly well based on one's understanding of such psychological roots. After all, any science does try to predict, though in a different sense. One has to pay tribute to Indian astrology for keeping alive the tradition of predictive astrology intact. Nowhere else in the world is astrology a continuous living tradition as it has been in India.

In my opinion I feel that the primary purpose of astrology is not fortune telling, but an examination of awareness, a journey into the psyche, into the unconscious forces which stem from the past vasanas , into the 'shadow' (a term used by Carl Jung which comes close to the tantric papa purusha ), into the universe that we have within us, into the battle between the opposing forces and the process of attaining equilibrium. Of course these forces manifest as our (as well as others') reactions to situations, situations that we attract to ourselves because of these unconscious drives ( vasanas and samskaras ), which thus incidentallyinspiration our life path. Fortune telling based on such symbols of the psyche like the horoscope, dreams, omens etc is the most ordinary practice of this knowledge, although an application prone to error due to various factors.

Yet astrology can help us comprehend our karma, especially the hidden or unseen factors that shape our life as our own karmic forces, and thereby encourage us to take accountability for our actions. But the maximum benefit of a study of this kind of a subject is Self-actualization or individuation- a process that supports the individual in an expression of one 'self', taking one to the final stages of Nirvana. When this happens the individual feels a sense of psychic "wholeness", which is a natural state of equilibrium. Don't the ancient texts promise that anyone who studies and teaches astrology is assured of final liberation (moksha)? That is the ultimate goal of a spiritual system like astrology.
